Course Descriptions
The course content required for a CSD PhD requires rigorous exploration of a specific area in CSD and one ancillary, interdisciplinary area.
Concentration Courses
CSD 6100 Proseminar in Communication Sciences and Disorders (1 cr.)
This course is offered each Fall and Spring and is required during a student’s first four semesters of study. It is designed to expose students to current research and topics in the field. This course may be repeated when content differs for a maximum of nine semester hours. Required 4 semester enrollment.
CSD 6302 Introduction to Doctoral Studies (3 cr.)
This course is offered during the Fall of every year and designed to be taken in the student’s first year of study. It will include a review of the history of science in CSD, Ph.D. shortages, IRB, issues in scientific conduct, mentoring models, and preparation for study as well as launching a successful academic career post-graduation.
CSD 6304 Servant Leadership, Collaboration, and Research in Communication Sciences and Disorders (3 cr.)
This course will be offered one semester per year. It will focus on models of servant leadership and collaboration and describe how these can be used in day-to-day scholarly practice effectively.
CSD 6306 Advanced Neuroscience of Speech, Language, Swallowing, and Hearing (3 cr.)
This course is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the neuroscience of speech, language, swallowing, and hearing, incorporating current research findings with current perspectives on assessment and treatment of language disorders. It will cover speech, language, swallowing, and hearing mechanisms in the human brain as well as the various types of research methods used in human neuroscience, and their intended uses.
CSD 6308 Doctoral Seminar in CSD (3 cr.)
This course is designed to provide an advanced study of development and disorders in speech, language, hearing, and/or swallowing. It will cover etiology, theory, assessment and intervention and incorporate the latest research in a given area. This course may be repeated when content differs for a maximum of nine semester hours. Each member of the graduate faculty will be given an opportunity to develop a doctoral seminar based on his or her area of expertise and these seminars will be rotated each semester.
CSD 6v10 Doctoral Independent Study in Advanced Communication Sciences and Disorders (1-3 cr.)
Designed to give individual student opportunities for advance work in their area of concentration. Permission of instructor is required. This course may be repeated when content differs for a maximum of 12 semester hours. Each member of the graduate faculty will have an opportunity to offer independent study.
CSD 6312 Applied Skills for Conducting Research in Communication Sciences & Disorders (3 cr.)
This course will give an overview of relevant skills for designing and conducting research in communication sciences and disorders, including a summary of relevant software and techniques for its effective use.
CSD 6314 Matlab Programming for Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences (3 cr.)
This course will present an introduction to applications of Matlab programming for research in speech, language and hearing science. It will cover the basics of data input, output, and organization, as well as strategies for data analysis.
CSD 6315 Single Subject Research Design in Communication Sciences and Disorders (3 cr.)
This course will cover effective use of single-subject research designs in communication sciences and disorders. It will cover methodological approaches, rationale, data analysis, and interpretation.
CSD 6317 Laboratory & Instrumentation Science (3 cr.)
Students will receive theoretical and practical training using selected instruments used in the field of speech-language pathology. This course may be repeated if a different instructor and content are offered.
CSD 6318 Seminar in Evidence-Based Practice and Implementation Science (3 cr.)
This course summarizes and provides experience in the use of evidence-based practice principles as well as implementation science practices.
Interdisciplinary Courses
Because of the interdisciplinary nature of CSD, an interdisciplinary area with 3 courses (3 credits each) will be required. These may include graduate courses in: biology, psychology, neuroscience, education, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, engineering, computer science, etc. Students will be encouraged to select one interdisciplinary area with the guidance of their mentor and the Plan of Study Committee, as opposed to several areas.
Statistical and Experimental Design Courses
Nine credits will be required in statistical and experimental design to ensure strong research design and analysis skills. These courses may include: EDP 6360, Experimental Design I and EDP 6361, Experimental Design II, MIS 6325 Quantitative Methods: Survey Research Using PLS Analysis, PSY 5305 Advanced Experimental Design, SOC 6307 Statistical Methods for Survey Research, SOC 6314 Advanced Quantitative Analysis, or other statistics and methodology courses approved by the student’s Plan of Study Committee.
Mentored Teaching
CSD 6303 Mentored Teaching in CSD I (1 cr.)
This course is designed to examine models of adult learning, designing syllabi and course objectives, and to develop a philosophy of teaching. Students will also be required to regularly participate in a class selected for their future teaching in the Mentored II Teaching section. Required.
CSD 6304 Mentored Teaching in CSD II (1 cr.)
This course is designed to allow students the opportunity to develop, modify, and teach several class sessions in a course taught by a CSD mentor. Students are required to attend class regularly, be evaluated by students and the mentor, and develop a teaching portfolio. CSD 6303 is the pre-requisite. Required.
Professional Writing
CSD 6305 Professional Writing in CSD I (2 cr.)
This course is designed to introduce and develop technical writing skills in students pursuing a CSD doctorate. Students will write article reviews and sections of articles. Required.
Students are required to take either 6306 or 6307 after 6305. Both may be taken; however, only one is required:
CSD 6306 Professional Writing in CSD II (2 cr.)
This course is designed to extend technical writing skills to writing and submitting presentation proposals and publications in CSD. As part of the course, students will develop a manuscript for publication. CSD 6305 is the prerequisite.
CSD 6307 Professional Writing in CSD III (2 cr.)
This course is designed to extend technical writing skills to grant writing in CSD. Students will prepare a grant for submission. CSD 6305 is the prerequisite.
Comprehensive Examination
Comprehensive Examination (no credit). Students research and write responses to questions provided by committee members. Required.
Dissertation
CSD 6v21 Doctoral Dissertation (1-6 cr.)
Students research, analyze, write and defend an approved dissertation. This course may be repeated for credit, up to 12 credits. Up to 12 credits can be counted towards the degree. Required. Students must have passed all course work and successfully passed their Comprehensive Examination before beginning the Doctoral Dissertation.
