Requirements to Serve as a Clinical Educator
Clinical Educators must...
- Hold CCC-SLP certification
- Be one year past Clinical Fellowship (Individual state regulations may apply. Please check your state’s regulations regarding student supervision.)
- Have completed two hours of continuing education in the area of supervision*
*ASHA is now requiring that all SLPs who supervise a graduate student or a clinical fellow must have completed two hours of continuing education in the area of supervision before they can supervise. If you have not completed these CEUs, Baylor University provides an online option through CAPCSD e-learning course instructions, at no cost to CAPCSD member programs. You may also take a supervision workshop via ASHA or attend one in your local community.
What You Will Do as a Clinical Educator
- Students under the Clinical Educator's supervision slowly take over caseload based on the Clinical Educator's clinical judgement of the student's knowledge and skill acquisition.
- Supervision begins direct and active (75-100%), as if the student has no prior clinical experience, and gradually decreases to the ASHA minimum requirements (no less than 25% during treatment, 50% during evaluations).
- Clinical Educators provide ongoing feedback and conduct informal and formal assessments of the student's performance.
About Clinical Placements
- Clinical rotations are 9-13 weeks in length, depending on the semester.
- Practicum students are scheduled as outlined by the Residential Clinical Director and the Clinical Educator responsible for the supervision of the student.
- Any significant alterations to the schedule or student requests must be discussed with the Baylor placement team or clinical faculty.
- All clinical absences must be approved by the Clinical Educator and clinical faculty.
