Apply to Graduate School
A Preparatory Guide for Applying to Graduate School
Step 1: Connect with Your Professors
Participate, engage, go to office hours. You will soon be requesting letters of recommendation from at least three professors. The better they know you, the more they can speak to your strengths and write a strong letter of recommendation!
Step 2: Build Your Resume
Professional and simple resumes are recommended. The Baylor Career Center is a great resource for this! On your resume, you should include:
- Overall GPA
- Major GPA
- Leadership roles
- Volunteerism
- Research
- Work experience
Step 3: Write Your Personal Statement
What are your goals? This is an opportunity to tell your story and why you feel led to the field. What are you passionate about? What skills and talents do you bring that would make you an asset to the program? Why are you choosing to apply to that specific program? The Baylor Career Center can be a resource for this!
Step 4: Research Different Universities
Where do you feel led? Make a list of priorities that you value. Where do you feel like you would thrive? Which program has the sense of community that would allow you to pursue excellence, be encouraged and to grow into the professional that you are intended to become? Go to interest sessions at each university.
Step 5: Apply
Make a calendar of deadlines. Make a spreadsheet of application requirements and due dates. Prepare your materials and turn in all application materials by the deadlines.
