Students in Baylor’s online SLP program attend 90-minute, live online classes in the evenings while completing clinical experiences during the day. The exact number of classes varies by trimester and whether a student is enrolled full-time or part-time. Online SLP students must have a flexible schedule to balance coursework at night with practicum or internship responsibilities during the day.
No, students with a bachelor’s degree in a field other than Communication Sciences and Disorders or Speech-Language Pathology may apply to the online SLP program through Baylor’s Leveling Track. These students will complete required prerequisite coursework in the online SLP program before beginning graduate-level SLP studies. All students are also required to have completed a biology, social science, statistics, and either chemistry or physics course. If a student is missing any of these, they will need to be completed at an outside university.
Students in Baylor’s online SLP program begin clinical experiences during the second trimester (full-time) or fourth trimester (part-time). Throughout their time in the program, online SLP students will complete three clinical practica and one clinical internship, totaling eight credit hours, a minimum of 400 clinical clock hours spent with patients, and over 1,400 hours at clinical sites.
While some students choose to work during the early portions of the program before clinical placements begin, it is important for students to carefully consider the time commitment required for coursework and clinical placements. Practicum experiences typically require 24 hours per week onsite, while the internship requires approximately 35-40 hours per week. Clinical placements are typically scheduled during regular business hours.
Graduates of Baylor’s online SLP program will have completed the academic and clinical requirements necessary to pursue licensure and certification as a Speech-Language Pathologist. However, licensure is granted by individual state licensing boards, and some states may require additional steps after graduation.
Baylor’s online SLP program can be completed in approximately 20 months (5 trimesters) for full-time students and approximately 28 months (7 trimesters) for part-time students. Students entering the Leveling Track will need one to two additional trimesters to complete prerequisite coursework before beginning the graduate curriculum.
