Larry Umberger

Larry Umberger is an American Sign Language (ASL) Lecturer at Baylor University's Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. After earning his Bachelor of Communication Arts at Gallaudet University, he directed an interpreter internship program at the Central Texas Council of the Deaf, and taught ASL at McLennan Community College.

After achieving the highest level, 5, on the American Sign Language Proficiency Exam (ASLPI), Umberger received his Master of Education from Lamar University in 2017. Since then, his career has focused on integrating innovative digital tools into ASL education. Today, he collaborates with Baylor’s Department of Computer Science and Marist University to research analogical reasoning in the iconicity of sign languages and gestures. As a long-time advocate for the Deaf community, he has directed Deaf Awareness events, conducted educational workshops, and helped create video dictionaries for Honduran Sign Language (LESHO).
